September 2005 Minutes
September 12, 2005
Meeting was called to order at 12:45pm in the LGI room by Co-Vice President, Jane Jones. Members signed in and introduced themselves. Those present were: Ken Sanders, Linda Fox, Angela Beauford, Sandra Alston, Sue Coscarelly, Dena Shammami, Rise Siegel, Lori Schneider, Lori Heiden, Laura Becks, Sue Reynolds, Pam Shapiro, Mae-Yong Ogletree, Lynn Wilsher, Tonya Corbitt, Myra Anderson, Judy Culbertson, DJ Holmes, Jane Jones and Betty Steinke. New Assistant Principal, Linda Fox, was welcomed to the meeting.
No minutes were available from the July 11, 2005 meeting.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—Mr. Sanders thanked all who assisted with August Registration Days. Everything ran very smoothly. Still need volunteers for Picture Day which is Wednesday, September 14. Jane Jones will get volunteers. This is for the students who were unable to get their picture taken during registration. There is a picture retake day in October. -Mr. Sanders is asking for PTSA assistance for Meap snacks. Meap testing will begin October 6 and run through October 28, 2005. There will be no testing on October 13 and 14 in observance of Yom Kippur. Sixth through eighth grades will be tested in English Language Arts and Math. In addition, sixth grade students will be tested in Social Studies, and eighth grade students will be tested in Science. Students will be encouraged to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast. Myra Anderson, team teacher for seventh grade, will buy snack items and bill the PTSA. DJ Holmes suggested that the budget be raised from $400 to $500 because we have more students taking the test this year. Rise Siegel made the motion to raise the budget from $400 to $500. Seconded by Laura Becks. Motion carried. Rise Siegel made a suggestion for snack baskets in the future. It will be discussed in May for the 2006-2007 school year. -Our next meeting will be October 10, 2005 at 7:00 PM. Afterwards, there is a district wide meeting sponsored by East. It will be a time to meet and greet the new superintendent, Sue Zurvalec, as well as other school board members. -Wacky Walk is Sunday, October 16th at the Costick Center from 1:30-3:30PM. The teacher representative is Karen Quigley. -Petition K-16. This is in regards to guaranteed funding at school. No school can endorse a potential proposal. Literature tables cannot be setup on school property. -Student Directory. The need was discussed to get the directory completed in a timely manner. Jane Jones will contact Sharon Cressman who volunteered at the June meeting to help with the directory. -Membership. PTSA is looking for more teacher participation. Mr. Sanders recommended putting a membership form in each mailbox. Rosemary Leeb will take care of this. -National Junior Honor Society sold water at Open House. The water had previously been purchased by PTSA for Recognition night. Donations from the sale went to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Sanders asked if PTSA wanted the water replaced or would we like to donate the water. After discussion, Laura Becks made a motion to donate the water. Seconded by Lori Schneider. Motion carried.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—Mrs. Fox made everyone aware of the modifications in the athletic program. We are now members of the Little Oak League. Games will be played outside the district. Pay to play program is in place. There is a $20 fee for Middle School students to participate in athletics. (This does not apply to intramurals.) Students must pay this fee and have a current health form on file to play.
STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT—Ms. Corbitt has 60 students interested in Student Council. With the help of teachers, the council will be narrowed down to two students per team or approximately 20 students. East students will vote for the officers after the council has been selected. By the next PTSA meeting, the council will be in place and Ms. Corbitt will have the school dance dates set.
CO-VICE PRESIDENT REPORT—Angela Beauford introduced the Bring Change to Make Change Contest, in connection with the Wacky Walk. Change will be collected at school beginning September 19 and run through October 12. Money collected will be used for providing grants to community programs and activities. Heritage Week is September 18-25. The main festival will be held Sunday, September 25, 2005 at the Costick Center from 12:30-5:50PM. This is a community wide event.
TREASURER’S REPORT—DJ Holmes informed us that we have changed banking institutions. We are now members of the LOC Credit Union.
SPIRIT WEAR—Rise Siegel has received a few orders for Spirit Wear. She can place an order at any time. There is a $50 set up charge for each order. She will probably order again at the holidays and in the spring. There was discussion about carrying items in the school store and the possibility of changing vendors.
PTSA WEBSITE—Ms. Shammami has the website up and running. She is looking for a parent volunteer. Lori Heiden can possibly help with the site and will contact Ms. Shammami.
OLD BUSINESS—Register by October 7, 2005 for the Wacky Walk and receive a Wacky Walk T-shirt. The registration fee is $5. The East Credit Union will begin operating on Tuesday, September 13, 2005. This is a chance for students to open a savings account. The credit union is open every Tuesday. Application forms are in Ms. Shammami’s room # 233. ECU is connected with the LOC Credit Union. Parents may also open accounts by filing out a form and having a valid driver’s license. Students may not withdraw more than $3 without parental consent.
NEW BUSINESS—PTSA is looking for someone to chair the Social Committee.
