December 2006 Minutes

EMS Parent Group Monday, December 11, 2006

A regular meeting of the EMS Parent Group was called to order by President Jane Jones in the LGI room. Those in attendance were: Lori Schneider, Sue Reynolds, Jane Jones, Suzanne Romero, DJ Holmes, Angela Beauford, Ken Sanders, Lori Heiden, Karen Butler, Rose Cipriano, and Betty Steinke.

Minutes were read and approved after one correction.

Principal’s report—Mr. Sanders is a member of the middle school restructuring committee. Co-chaired by the four principals. Dr. Cost is present at the meetings. East is very well represented at the meetings by teachers and parents. Students will have six periods per day at 55 minutes each period. Extra time will allow for closure after an assignment or experiment. Students will have one less choice. Enrichments will be taught by a core teacher. Semester vs. Trimester—looking at it for middle school. Three marking periods and progress reports at 6 or 7 weeks instead of 5. Decision will be made by the end of January. Regarding math…the process seems to be the issue not the math. The hope is that all eighth graders will take algebra. Next community forum will be March 12th. The subject is the Birds and Bees. Dance tomorrow. Tickets are being sold by Student Council during lunch. Cost is .50 and a book. No tickets sold at the door. All choir concert this Wednesday at 7:00 pm. ECU Winter Wonderland membership drive will be held on December 20th. Parents are welcome. Spring conferences are March 7th. End of card marking is March 23rd. No school that day.

V. President’s report—Angela still needs chaperones for the dance tomorrow. Also needs cups and lots of water. Parent Group will also sell baked goods.

Treasurer’s report—DJ presented options for liability insurance. Angela Beauford made a motion that we purchase officer’s liability only for $65. Suzanne Romero seconded the motion. Suzanne Romero has completed an audit of the Parent Group financial records. DJ asked that we add Lori Heiden, website administrator, to the executive board.

Next meeting is Monday, February 5th at 7:00 pm.
