March 2006 Minutes
East PTSA Minutes
Monday, March 6, 2006
A Regular Meeting of the PTSA was called to order by President Jane Jones at 12:50pm in the LGI room. Those in attendance were: April Varcoe, Rosemary Leeb, Sue Reynolds, Lori Heiden, Sharon Cressman, Lynn Carlson, Angela Beauford, Beth Rice, Mary Reynolds, Lori Schneider, Joy Gradin, Julie Wheeler, Sue Coscarelly, Lynn Wilsher, Jacqueline Chesney, DJ Holmes, Jane Jones, Ann Blanzy, Ken Sanders, Tonya Corbitt, Cheryl Swaim, and Betty Steinke.
Jackie Drake, teacher and track coach at EMS, presented a proposal for new track uniforms. There is a shortage of uniforms this year and the current ones are ten years old. Some fundraising was done for the uniforms, but $2,595.00 was still needed to cover the cost. Mrs. Drake asked for whatever financial help the PTSA could give. The track season will start soon and new uniforms would need to be ordered right away.
Minutes from the February meeting were read and approved as submitted.
Mary Reynolds, District Finance Director, was present to discuss the implications of the district budget cuts. Recommendations have been made for cutting 7 million dollars of the 13.7 million shortfall. These cuts are tied directly to our economy. As taxes go up, State funding goes down. Each Middle School will lose five teaching positions. Cuts at the High School level will happen next year. All suggestions for cuts will be on the district website. There is a public forum on March 20, 2006 at Maxfield Training Center at 7:00pm. This meeting will go through the specifics of what the reductions will look like. You may e-mail Mary Reynolds with any questions.
Congratulations to the East Orchestra who received all “Ones†in performance and sight reading last weekend.
V.P. Angela Beauford—spoke with someone at the school board in regards to recognizing the winners of the Reflections contest. We are to find a date and let them know how many students would be involved and they would discuss it. Angela will contact Katie Shureb for the information. Also presented information concerning how HHS Parent Forum functions since we have been discussing the pros and cons of being a PTSA.
Treasurer DJ Holmes—reported that we will be having a Spiritwear sale. The PTSA purchased a transporter (wheelchair) for the school.
Lynn Wilsher—8th Grade Dance has been changed to 8th Grade Party.
Lori Heiden—Sign up on the PTSA.org website if you want to be added to email list. This is not the same as listserve.
Action: After brief discussion, a motion was made by Sharon Cressman to write a check for $2,000 for track uniforms. Motion seconded by Angela Beauford. A vote was taken with unanimous approval.
Mrs. Ann Blanzy, counselor at East, was present to talk about scheduling. Scheduling is being done earlier this year because of budget cuts. Need to turn in their yellow sheets by Friday, March 17, 2006. Students will have seven classes every day. Block scheduling is gone but teams are not.
Next Meeting Date is Monday, April 3rd @ 12:45.
Respectfully,
Betty Steinke, secretary
