EMS Parent Group Tuesday, May 15, 2007
A regular meeting of the EMS Parent Group was called to order by President Jane Jones in the LGI room at 12:45 pm. Those in attendance were: Ken Sanders, Ellen Watts, Lori Schneider, Jane Jones, Sue Reynolds, DJ Holmes, Cheryl Swaim, Sharon Cressman, Molly Brennan, Angela Beauford, and Betty Steinke.
Minutes were read and approved as submitted.
Discussion—Low turnout for the last skating party. Bonaventure will waive fee if we book two rentals for next school year. Laser tag was mentioned as an alternative. Survey students at end of the year to see what the interest is. Skating is a social event, not a money maker. Amy Card is taking over skating parties for next year. Dates are tentatively set for October 2nd and April 15th, 2008. We need 125 students to attend to break even. Action: Cheryl Swaim will put together a survey for 6th and 7th grades to take during Titan Time to determine the interests for social events. Renting the ice arena was discussed. Possibly get a better rate for being a city-owned facility. Action: Molly Brennan will contact the Farmington Ice Arena to see what kind of a rate we can get.
Set a date for directories to be printed so they can be ready for the Fall Open House. Directories will be sold at all doors this year. Titan Training Day is August 27th. Action: Mr. Sanders will make deadline for opting out of directory by August 17th. Sharon Cressman will contact the District Media Center to reserve August 24th for printing the directories. Lori Heiden will have the names ready for printing.
Jane Jones officially introduced Molly Brennan as the new President for the EMS Parent Group. Cheryl Swaim has accepted the position of Co-Vice President.
A heartfelt thank you to Laura Kahsin and her volunteers who provided a week long expression of appreciation to all the teachers at East with treats and lunch on Friday.
Discussed purchasing two trees from Steinkopf’s Nursery. Certain trees may be purchased from them for $188. There is a 1 year warranty and they will plant the trees. Action: Jane will look into the watering logistics. Sharon Cressman made a motion that we purchase two trees from Steinkopf’s Nursery. Ellen Watts seconded the motion.
Important Dates
May 17th-- 7th & 8th grades at 10:00 am are invited to hear actor and author, Hill Harper (CSI-New York). He will be talking about his book which deals with the importance of education and making good choices. Students may purchase his book for $7.20. Book signing available after the program. Tonya Corbitt is point person. Action: Cheryl Swaim made a motion that Parent Group purchase five books and donate them to East’s Media Center. Ellen Watts seconded the motion.
May 29th and 30th-- Eighth graders will go to Holocaust Museum.
June 7th--Eighth Grade Party after school. Volleyball will be available. Theme is American Idol. Action: DJ will contact Mrs. Blanzy concerning mock election awards.
June 8th-- Eighth Grade Cedar Point trip. Deb Erickson is organizer.
June 11th-- Eighth Grade Recognition Night at North Farmington High School Gym. Maria Borri & Pam Hoelscher are organizing the reception. Action: Cheryl will send an email to 7th grade parents asking for volunteers and donations.
Next meeting is scheduled for June 5th at 12:45pm.
